WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Raunchy 'Grown Ups' Sequel Edges Out 'Pacific Rim; 'Despicable Me 2' Repeats

The Minions from Despicable Me 2 may have conquered the box office for a second week in a row, but the most asked question coming out of the weekend was how Adam Sandler's toilet humor antics attracted a slightly larger audience than giant robots clanking metal with Godzilla.

Grown Ups 2 and Pacific Rim clashed head-to-head for the #2 and #3 spots over the weekend, however Adam Sandler's comedy emerged victorious with $42.5 million to Pacific Rim's $38 million. Grown Ups 2 and Pacific Rim appeal to two completely polarizing demographics, but both films still fell short of Despicable Me 2's second weekend haul, opening close to $45 million.

Despicable Me 2 continues its assault on the summer box office, breaking the $200 million milestone in 12 days of release. Only Toy Story 3 and Shrek 2 reached $200 million a few days faster with both finishing above $400 million at the box office.

Note: These #'s are based on Sunday's projections and can change with Monday's actual #'s

#1 Despicable Me 2 (1)
$44.8 million / $229.2 million total

With Grown Ups 2 and Pacific Rim both reaching at least $35 million over the weekend, the Minions still was the top draw of the box office, bring its 12-day cume up to a massive $229 million total. By the end of next weekend, Despicable Me 2 will pass the original's $251 million run with $300 million, perhaps even $350 million still in range. Illumination Entertainment's cash cow is here to stay with the Minions spin-off next year and a Despicable Me 3 eventually down the road.

#2 Grown Ups 2 (NR)
$42.5 million / $42.5 million total

Except for Jack and Jill and That's My Boy in recent memory, Adam Sandler continues to strike box office gold with his formulaic raunchy toilet humor in Grown Ups 2. Grown Ups 2 opened slightly higher than the first film from 2010 with $42.5 million to claim the second place spot behind Despicable Me 2. Critics and audiences are heavily polarized towards the Adam Sandler sequel, however the highly negative reviews won't keep Sandler from yet another $100 million comedy.

#3 Pacific Rim (NR)
$38.3 million / $38.3 million total

Fanboys have voiced their disappointment with the fact that Grown Ups 2 outperformed Pacific Rim over the weekend, but the film's $38 million opening remains an impressive feat. Pacific Rim is now Guillermo del Toro's highest opener, knocking off his 2008 sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army ($34 million). Positive reviews and word-of-mouth should contribute to at least a $100 million run by summer's end.

#4 The Heat (3)
$14.0 million / $112.4 million total

Even with Grown Ups 2 bursting onto the scene with its excess of toilet humor, The Heat emerged out of its third frame with a 43 percent drop, the week-to-week drop for any film in the Top 5 over the weekend. The Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy buddy cop film currently ranks as the highest grossing comedy of the summer.

#5 The Lone Ranger (2)
$11.1 million / $71.1 million total

Despite dropping 61 percent from its Fourth of July opening weekend, Disney's The Lone Ranger continued to hang on to the fifth spot with $11 million. That edges out the studio's own Monsters University, which claimed the sixth spot. In the next few days, The Lone Ranger will certainly outgross Disney's 2012 bomb, John Carter ($73.1 million), but will finish around Prince of Persia's $90 million run from three summers ago.

Opening Next Week: Turbo (Wednesday), The Conjuring, Red 2, R.I.P.D.
