WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: 'Despicable Me 2' Conquers Fourth of July Box Office, Depp's 'Lone Ranger' Left for Dead

The lovable minions from the highly anticipated sequel, Despicable Me 2 lit up the Fourth of July holiday frame earning the top spot this weekend as well as becoming the most successful animated film for the first 5-days of its run.  Despicable Me 2 looks to join animated juggernauts such as Shrek 2, The Lion King and Finding Nemo by summer's end.

However, Johnny Depp's costly iteration of The Lone Ranger couldn't hold a candle to the success of Despicable Me 2, opening much lower than anticipated by many box-office analysts. With a weak $29 million 3-day opening, The Lone Ranger is pegged to be one of 2013's greatest financial failures.

The Heat, Monsters University and World War Z round out the weekend's Top 5 with all three films continuing their ascent towards their next milestones.

Note: These #'s are based on the Monday's actual #'s this week.

#1 Despicable Me 2 (NR)
$83.5 million / $143.1 million total

The audience-favorite minions made their own fireworks over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, opening with the largest 5-day opener for any animated film ever. The 3-day total wasn't too shabby either, edging out Pixar's prequel Monsters University which opened three weeks ago with $82 million. Despicable Me 2 is on a path north of $300 million by the end of the summer and looks to become summer's second highest-grossing film behind Iron Man 3

#2 The Lone Ranger (NR)
$29.2 million / $48.7 million total

Johnny Depp might draw millions as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean, but even doing the same routine as Tonto in The Lone Ranger couldn't save the western from being another Prince of Persia or John Carter. This $200 million production won't come close to making its money back and closes the door on yet another potential franchise for Disney.

#3 The Heat (2)
$24.8 million / $86.3 million total

When it comes to comedies, Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy are box office gold and The Heat in its second frame is already developing some legs to rival Bullock's 2009 film, The Proposal and McCarthy's 2011 comedy, Bridesmaids. A final run over $140 million seems certain and could warrant a sequel down the line.

#4 Monsters University (1)
$19.7 million / $216.3 million total

After two weeks headlining the box office, Pixar's Monsters University dropped harder than every other film due to direct competition from Illumination Entertainment's Despicable Me 2. With a 56% in its third frame, Monsters University faces an uphill climb to still reach the $300 million vicinity, a milestone that looks less and less probable by the day.

#5 World War Z (3)
$18.4 million / $159.0 million total

Brad Pitt's zombie apocalypse, World War Z rounds out the Top 5 dropping two spots from last week, but continues to performed better than anticipated with a $200 million run still in play. Even if World War Z falls a few million short of the double century mark, this will still be Brad Pitt's most successful film passing 2005's Mr. and Mrs. Smith with Angelina Jolie.

Opening Next Week: Pacific Rim, Grown Ups 2
