WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: 'Fast & Furious' Rides Again, 'Now You See Me' Outplays 'After Earth'

After a record-setting Memorial Day weekend, all of the key holdovers fell over 50 percent over the weekend. Despite a hefty 64 percent drop, Fast & Furious 6 rode to the top spot once again for the second weekend in a row.

The real upset of the weekend was Now You See Me outperforming its new release competition After Earth. With household names like Will Smith and M. Night Shyamalan attached to the sci-fi survival flick, After Earth was a shoe-in for the runner-up spot. After a string of panned releases including The Happening and The Last Airbender, M. Night Shyamalan certainly has his detractors, many of whom seemed to have abandoned the director.

Other May holdovers, Star Trek Into Darkness and Epic continued to battle it out for the final two spots of this weekend's Top 5. Comedy sequel The Hangover Part III quickly plummeted down the chart in its second week, sending the Wolfpack out with a whimper.

Note: These #'s are based on Sunday's projections and can change with Monday's actual #'s

#1 Fast & Furious 6 (1)
$34.5 million / $170.4 million total

Fast & Furious 6 joins 2013 juggernaut, Iron Man 3 as the second film of the summer to top the charts for two consecutive weekends. This sixth high-octane outing dropped an expected 64 percent in its second frame, bringing its ten-day total to $170 million. At its current pace, Fast & Furious 6 should cross the double-century mark by the end of the next weekend with a possible $250 million on the horizon.

#2 Now You See Me (NR)
$28.1 million / $28.1 million total

Working its magic in second place with an overperforming $28 million is Now You See Me. While most analysts expected After Earth to claim the second spot, this magic-fueled caper stole the show from under the panned M. Night Shyamalan sci-fi flick. With a powerhouse ensemble of Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine, Now You See Me will continue to attract a fairly modest audience in the coming weeks.

#3 After Earth (NR)
$27.0 million / $27.0 million total

Will Smith and M. Night Shyamalan used to be guarantees for box office success. Not anymore. Smith is fine as long as he sticks with his Men in Black series, the third almost reaching $180 million exactly one year ago. Shyamalan, however, still faces the wrath of irate fanboys from his 2010 film, The Last Airbender. A third place position for After Earth doesn't bode well for fan's faith in Shyamalan as After Earth was projected in the high 30s to low 40s.

#4 Star Trek Into Darkness (3)
$16.4 million / $181.2 million total

Dropping one spot from last week's Memorial Day frame is JJ Abrams' Star Trek  Into Darkness. Into Darkness continues to trail the 2009 reboot by $10 million with little chances of matching Star Trek's breakout $257 million run. Star Trek Into Darkness is assured to join the double century club in the following weeks, but not much more beyond that. Still, JJ Abrams will have two $200 million films under his belt before Star Wars Episode VII slated for 2015.

#5 Epic (4)
$16.4 million / $65.2 million total

Rounding out the weekend's Top 5 films is the sole family film in theaters, Epic. This animated adventure dropped 51 percent from last weekend, bringing its cumulative gross to $65 million. With Monsters University still three weeks away, Epic should continue to hold with its sights on the century mark.

Opening Next Week: The Internship, The Purge
