BLU-RAY TUESDAY: 'Dark Skies' Crash Lands, 'Cleopatra' Celebrates 50 on Blu-Ray

The final Tuesday in May offers just two new major home media releases. The first 2013 blockbusters still have a few more weeks until their street dates hit in June, but in the meantime, home media audiences can check out Dark Skies and the debut of 1963 classic Cleopatra

First out of the gate is Dark Skies, a mixture of sci-fi and horror that copies several classic films from the two genres. Dark Skies, directed by Scott Stewart, poses the question of other beings living alongside us, particularly when young Sammy (Kadan Rockett) believes he's communicating with the Sandman.

Dark Skies also stars Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton and Dakota Goyo and is distributed by Starz/ Anchor Bay as a Blu-Ray, DVD, Digital Copy, UV combo pack.

Also being released this week is Elizabeth Taylor's Cleopatra. The 1963 film debuts on Blu-Ray for its 50th anniversary in two formats, Digibook packaging and standard Blu-Ray packaging.

Cleopatra follows the triumphs and tragedies of the Egyptian queen who rose to power at the time of the Roman Empire, fell in love with Julius Caesar (Rex Harrison) and later Mark Antony (Richard Burton). Clocking in at over 4 hours, this Joseph L. Mankiewicz epic is split over the two discs. Cleopatra is distributed by 20th Century Fox.

  1. Not sure about "Dark Skies"; never really seen the show once but gotta love that "Cleopatra". Elizabeth Taylor was truly phenomenal in that role and she owned it. An outstanding actress who was ahead of her time. There will never be another Elizabeth Taylor.

  2. I saw "Dark Skies" and really wasn't impressed with it. "Cleopatra" is definitely a must-own in Digibook packaging.
