WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: 'Gatsby' Parties Large at #2, Comes Up Short Against 'Iron Man' Repeat
It wasn't no surprise that superhero juggernaut Iron Man 3 and Baz Luhrmann's stylistic retelling of F. Scott Fitzgerald's American classic would pack a 1-2 punch during this weekend's Mother's Day frame.
But was anyone expecting Luhrman's The Great Gatsby to benefit from being pushed back from a Oscar-bait holiday release to being sandwiched between two of summer's most anticipated releases, a spot dreaded by many jockeying for heated positions? $51 million says differently.
Now two weeks deep into an already lucrative summer movie season, the studio tentpoles on deck in the coming weeks have their work cut out for them. And will any be able to catch up to Iron Man 3's overperforming haul?
#1 Iron Man 3 (1)
$72.5 million / $284.9 million total
Iron Man 3 mania is still going strong, soaring above all the competition this weekend. Dropping 58% from last week's massive $175 million haul, Iron Man 3 is set to become the highest grossing film in the trilogy in the coming week even with Star Trek Into Darkness blasting into theaters on Wednesday in IMAX and Thursday everywhere else. $400 million is assured at this point.
#2 The Great Gatsby (NR)
$51.1 million / $51.1 million total
Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby pulled off the expected and the unexpected in its opening weekend. While taking the #2 spot was expected behind Iron Man 3, what surprised many box-office analysts was its impressive $51 million dollar opening. Mixed reviews will certainly keep the film from obtaining strong legs, but passing the century mark in a few weeks will make the six-month wait worth every penny.
#3 Pain and Gain (2)
$5 million / $41.6 million total
After a massive drop last week courtesy of Marvel's juggernaut, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's action-powered vehicle, Pain and Gain fell much softer in its third weekend down a respectable 33%. The Michael Bay film still has sights on $50 million by the end of its run.
#4 Tyler Perry Presents Peeples (NR)
$4.9 million / $4.9 million total
Unlike Temptation earlier this year, most of the Tyler Perry crowd stayed home from his Meet the Parents knockoff, Peeples. Unable to crack $5 million, Peeples finds itself off to an already weak start at the box-office and the first flop of Summer 2013.
#5 42 (3)
$4.7 million / $84.7 million total
Dropping two spots from last weekend, 42 continues to hold well with a slim 23% decline, almost topping Tyler Perry Presents Peeples for the #4 spot. If 42 continues to hold as it has for the past few weeks, this Jackie Robinson story could still be eyeing a $100 million run nobody expected.
Opening Next Week: Star Trek Into Darkness
