WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Washington, Wahlberg Action Flick Outguns 'Smurfs' Sequel in Weekend Frame

Normally it's the evil wizard Gargamel's job to cause despair for the Smurfs, but not this weekend as Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg's bested the little blue people from the top spot with their latest action flick, 2 Guns

In 2 Guns, Washington and Wahlberg get caught up in robbing millions of dollars from a Mexican drug cartel, but while the formulaic action plot catapulted the film to the top spot of this weekend's box office, its $27 million opening is also the lowest #1 of the summer.

Family film, The Smurfs 2 fell short of not only the top spot, but also the #2 spot even finding itself behind last week's superhero champion, The Wolverine. Opening this past Wednesday, the Smurfs sequel burned nearly $10 million of its gross before the weekend started, leaving its 3-day total about half of the first film's $35 million opening weekend.

Note: These #'s are based on Sunday's projections and can change with Monday's actual #'s

#1 2 Guns (NR)
$27.4 million / $27.4 million total

It's not smart to bet against a debuting family film, but 2 Guns is the rare exception to the rule. Audience aren't tiring of formulaic plots involving stolen drug money and Mexican cartels in the slightest, particularly with Denzel Washington (Flight) and Mark Wahlberg (Ted) shooting side by side. Facing four new competitors this coming weekend, 2 Guns will slip to the #5 spot after a week of release.

#2 The Wolverine (1)
$21.7 million / $95.0 million total

After ten days of release, The Wolverine continues to trail all five previous X-Men films at the box office with its sights set on a finish south of $150 million. With sci-fi thriller Elysium set to release this Friday and Kick-Ass 2 the following week, The Wolverine will only continue to lose momentum from here on out. At least X-Men: Days of Future Past is slated for next year's Memorial Day frame.

#3 The Smurfs 2 (NR)
$18.2 million / $27.8 million total

The little blue people from Smurf Village failed to bring as many families to the theaters for a second outing. Opening this past Wednesday to a lackluster $5 million, The Smurfs 2's 5-day total trails the 2011 film's 3-day gross by over 25%. Massive sequel drops for the live action/CGI genre are not uncommon. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked grossed 40% less than its previous installment. Even if The Smurfs 2 falls short of the century mark, a third film is slated for 2015.

#4 The Conjuring (2)
$13.7 million / $108.6 million total

In its third frame at the box office, supernatural horror The Conjuring continues to defy a typical frontloaded run for a film of that genre. Slipping a slim 38%, The Conjuring raises its three-week cume over $108 million to become the 18th film to reach the century mark. A finish around $140 million is still possible.

#5 Despicable Me 2 (3)
$10.4 million / $326.7 million total

After five weeks, Despicable Me 2 is now the 5th highest grossing animated film domestically adding another $10 million to its $326 million total. The Steve Carell animated spy comedy has a few more week left before the younger audiences return back to school to cross a highly impressive $350 million milestone.

Opening Next Week: We're the Millers (Wednesday), Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (Wednesday), Elysium, Planes
