WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: 'Man of Steel' Overpowers Competition Over Father's Day Weekend
Superman blasted through the box office this Father's Day weekend like a speeding bullet with no signs of stopping anytime soon. Zack Snyder's Superman reboot, Man of Steel, broke the June record opening up to $129 million. ($12 million came from Walmart exclusive showings the night before).
Already one of the highest grossing films of 2013, Man of Steel is already looking ahead at the inevitable sequel. While critics were mixed on Man of Steel, audiences are warming up to this reboot more than 2006's Superman Returns.
Though Superman overshadowed every other title over the weekend, Seth Rogen's comedy This is the End managed to debut in second place with $21 million over its 3-day run and $33 million over 5 days.
Note: These #'s are based on Monday's actual #'s this week.
#1 Man of Steel (NR)
$116.6 million / $128.7 million total
Superman did more than return this Father's Day weekend, it dominated the box office. Opening twice as high as 2006's Superman Returns, Man of Steel set the June record with over $116 million. That tops 2010's animated hit, Toy Story 3 which opened to $110 million. A second-place finish behind Iron Man 3 as the highest grossing film of the summer seems certain.
#2 This is the End (NR)
$20.7 million / $33.0 million total
Who would open against a box-office behemoth like Man of Steel? This is the End. Even with a near $100 million gap between first and second place, This is the End opened to a respectable $20 million. The Seth Rogen apocalyptic comedy catered to the non-Superman crowd and with very few successful comedies opening so far this summer, This is the End has the genre to itself currently.
#3 Now You See Me (3)
$11.0 million / $80.7 million total
While last week's top two openers round out this weekend's Top 5, Now You See Me continues to hold on, surpassing many analysts' expectations with an $80 million after three weeks in theaters. If Now You See Me continues to hold as it has been, the Woody Harrelson magic caper still should finish above $100 million.
#4 Fast & Furious 6 (2)
$9.6 million / $219.7 million total
Fast & Furious 6 is officially the highest grossing film in its franchise, so now the rest of its run will set the benchmark for next summer's final installment. Fast & Furious 6 dropped two spots from last week and with action flicks being released every week through Fourth of July weekend, expect 50% drops every weekend from here on out.
#5 The Purge (1)
$8.3 million / $51.9 million total
Thanks to a frontloaded opening weekend, there will certainly be a Purge 2 coming out somewhere down the line. However, last week's #1 dropped four spots rounding out the Top 5 with a scary $8.3 million second weekend.
Opening Next Week: World War Z, Monsters University

A very hefty top 5 list to say the least. Can't wait to see what next week holds with two big releases coming out.
ReplyDeleteMonsters University definitely has #1 next week. I'm predicting Man of Steel #2.
