WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: 'Star Trek' Warps to #1, Misses $100 Million 4-Day Target

The burning question coming out of this past weekend was what just happened to Star Trek Into Darkness? Banking on the success of the 2009 blockbuster and the new found coolness to be a Trekkie, Into Darkness had its sights a reasonable $100 million over its first four days in release.

Not only did Star Trek fail to meet that milestone, but the sequel opened a notch lower than the previous film with an extra day and IMAX sneak peek. Granted, the switch from releasing Star Trek Into Darkness from May 17th to May 16th may have confused some moviegoers, but this less-than-stellar start will require substantial word-of-mouth to strike lightning twice.

Whether or not, Star Trek Into Darkness manages to cross $250 million or even $200 million remains to be seen, but the summer competition continues to stay fierce.

Note: These #'s are based on Sunday's projections and can change with Monday's actual #'s

#1 Star Trek Into Darkness (NR)
$70.6 million / $84.1 million total

Phasers are certainly on stun with Star Trek Into Darkness failing to match its predecessor's $75 million opening back in 2009. With four years of ticket inflation, 3D showings and keeping fans in the dark almost to its May release date, Star Trek Into Darkness should have blasted past the century mark over its extended opening weekend. While not a complete disappointment, this JJ Abrams sequel has its work cut out especially with the dual threat of Fast and Furious 6 and The Hangover Part III ahead.

#2 Iron Man 3 (1)
$35.2 million / $337.1 million total

Unless The Hunger Games: Catching Fire or perhaps even Man of Steel can generate enormous interest in the coming months, 2013 belongs to Iron Man 3. This latest installment of the superhero franchise just passed Spider-Man 3 and is gunning Spider-Man 2 in the next week or two to become the 5th highest grossing superhero movie in history. Despite a 50% drop, $400 million is more than reachable.

#3 The Great Gatsby (2)
$23.4 million / $90.2 million total

Moving The Great Gatsby from December to May may have seemed ill-advised at first, but Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic continues to surprise audiences and analysts with a strong $23 million second weekend. Gatsby will cross the century mark before the end of the coming weekend with much more to come.

#4 Pain and Gain (3)
$3.1 million / $46.6 million total

Michael Bay's Pain and Gain does know when to quit. With Iron Man 3, The Great Gatsby and Star Trek Into Darkness dominating the box-office, this Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson vehicle dropped a soft 38% with its sights still on $50 million.

#5 The Croods (7)
$2.8 million / $176.8 million total

The final spot in the Top 5 seemed like a lock for 42, but DreamWorks' The Croods continues to chug along adding nearly $3 million more to the bank. With little-to-no family-friendly competition out in theaters, The Croods continues what has been one of the strongest runs of 2013. But the buck stops next week when Blue Sky's Epic enters the mix.

Opening Next Week: The Hangover Part III (Thursday), Fast and Furious 6, Epic
