WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: 'Monsters University' and 'World War Z' Scare Superman Reboot Off Top Spot

The summer box office season might have started last month with $400 million blockbuster Iron Man 3, but with both Monsters University and World War Z opening north of $65 million, the first official weekend of summer 2013 ranks as the 8th largest weekend ever.

Pixar can rest easy now that their 14th feature, Monsters University cleared $80 million, a near-impossible feat that's only been broken once before by the animation studio. After a strong $30 million opening day, Monsters University already finds itself off to a more impressive start than Pixar's previous two films, Cars 2 and Brave.

Brad Pitt's zombie apocalyptic film, World War Z also opened higher than expected with $66 million. With Monsters University and World War Z taking the top two spots, last week's superhero champion, Man of Steel dropped to a third place finish.

Note: These #'s are based on Sunday's projections and can change with Monday's actual #'s

#1 Monsters University (NR)
$82.0 million / $82.0 million total

With the exception of 2011's Cars 2, Pixar's sequels have garnered a reputation for being standouts both critically and financially. Monsters University continues that success opening north of $82 million, the studio's second largest opening behind 2010's Toy Story 3. With the kids out of school, Monsters University should stretch its legs past $250 by summer's end unless Illumination Entertaiment's Despicable Me 2, which opens in two weeks, is able to give the Pixar prequel a run for its money.

#2 World War Z (NR)
$66.0 million / $66.0 million total

Brad Pitt shouldn't feel ashamed coming runner-up to Pixar. His zombie flick, World War Z made its mark, surpassing early expectations with a strong $66 million start. World War Z is the second biggest non #1 opener on record behind Roland Emmerich's disaster film, The Day After Tomorrow

#3 Man of Steel (1)
$41.2 million / $210.0 million total

Last week's top film, Man of Steel dropped two spots to third place with a $41 million second weekend. Zack Snyder's Superman reboot has already surpassed Superman Returns in ten days and continues an upward ascent towards becoming the second $300 million film of 2013.

#4 This is the End (2)
$13.0 million / $57.8 million total

As the sole adult comedy on the top box office charts, This is the End fell 37 percent in its second weekend, bringing its ten day total to nearly $58 million. A $100 million run is still in contention for the Seth Rogen/Emma Watson apocalyptic comedy.

#5 Now You See Me (3)
$7.9 million / $94.5 million total

Now You See Me keeps dishing out the tricks as the film continues to hold strong with nearly $8 million added to its $94 million total after four weeks at the box office. The magic caper should cross the $100 million mark in the next week.

Opening Next Week: The Heat, White House Down
