BLU-RAY TUESDAY: 'Olympus Has Fallen' Leads Week's Blu-ray Assault, 'Muppet Movie' Re-Released for Near Anniversary
Before Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx teamed up to survive an full-fledged assault on the White House in Roland Emmerich's explosion-fest, White House Down, another film with the same exact plot hit theaters this past spring. Olympus Has Fallen leads this week's new Blu-ray releases which also include: The Muppet Movie (The Nearly 35th Anniversary Edition), Once Upon a Time: The Complete Second Season, The Big Wedding and What Maisie Knew.
Much like Emmerich's White House Down, Gerard Butler takes on the Channing Tatum role, playing a Secret Service agent assigned to protect the President of the United States (Aaron Eckhart) after the White House is under siege by North Koreans. Olympus Has Fallen is released on Blu-ray by Sony Pictures as a Blu-ray, DVD, UltraViolet combo pack and is directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day).
Closing in on its 35th anniversary, The Muppet Movie makes it way to Blu-ray for the very first time this Tuesday. Released to theaters during the heyday of The Muppet Show in the late 70s, Kermit, Miss Piggy and the rest of the gang travel cross country to Hollywood to only be pursued by the villainous Doc Hopper. The Muppet Movie is released as a single disc Blu-ray with a digital copy from Disney.
In addition to The Muppet Movie, Disney is also releasing the complete second season of their Sunday night fantasy hit, Once Upon a Time. Once Upon a Time is a modern day take on classic fairy tales jumping between a quiet New England town and other dimensions. All 22 episodes of the second season are released over five Blu-ray discs in this set.
The Big Wedding and What Maisie Knew round out the major new releases on Blu-ray this week. Romantic comedy The Big Wedding comes from Lionsgate Films, starring Robert DeNiro, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, Robin Williams and Katherine Heigl as a family looking to reunite to an upcoming wedding. The Big Wedding is released as a single Blu-ray disc.
What Maisie Knew stars Julianne Moore and Steve Coogan as a couple in the process of getting divorced and their six-year-old daughter caught in the middle of the emotional turmoil. While not widely released in theaters, What Maisie Knew arrives on Blu-ray from Millennium Media in a Blu-ray, DVD combo pack. The film is adapted from the 1897 Henry James novel of the same name.
