WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: 'Monsters University' Repeats, Taking 'The Heat' and 'White House Down' to School

Raunchy buddy cop films and Roland Emmerich's latest assault on the White House since his 1996 film, Independence Day failed to put a dent into Pixar's continuing success of the final box office frame in June.

Pixar prequel, Monsters University topped the charts for the second week in a row with a $46 million weekend, more than half of its $82 million opening haul. With Despicable Me 2 and The Lone Ranger set for Wednesday release this holiday weekend, the family competition grows stiff.

Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy's comedy The Heat opened in second with $40 million, coming up short of the top spot, but bolting past the frame's only other new wide release, White House Down. The Jamie Foxx action vehicle scored a decade low for Roland Emmerich outside of his 2011 film, Anonymous.

Note: These #'s are based on Sunday's projections and can change with Monday's actual #'s

#1 Monsters University (1)
$46.2 million / $171.0 million total

Monsters University continues to steamroll over the competition for the second consecutive week. With kids out of school for the summer and Despicable Me 2 patiently waiting to make its mark with families this coming weekend, Monsters University achieved the best second weekend drop for a Pixar film since 2009's Up.

#2 The Heat (NR)
$40.0 million / $40.0 million total

Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy are no strangers summer box office gold with both The Proposal and Bridesmaids breaking out back in 2009 and 2011 respectively. The buddy cop comedy faces no comedic competition until Grown Ups 2 on July 12th, so even with all these family films being released over the holiday weekend, The Heat is expected to hold strong.

#3 World War Z (2)
$29.8 million / $123.7 million total

Last week's runner-up, World War Z continues to march onto a $175 million run and depending on the coming weekend, $200 million is still in play, placing the Brad Pitt zombie flick above his 2005 star-powered Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Regardless, its financial success already warrants a sequel or two in the next few years.

#4 White House Down (NR)
$25.7 million / $25.7 million total

It's almost a shock to see a Roland Emmerich movie debut under $30 million, but with all its similarities to Antoine Fuqua's Olympus Has Fallen from earlier this year, even Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx headlining the "White House attack" film couldn't draw in the big bucks.

#5 Man of Steel (3)
$20.8 million / $248.7 million total

With surpassing Superman Returns' run in the rear-view mirror, the Zack Snyder Superman reboot continues to perform like a summer tentpole blockbuster, still dropping roughly 50% per weekend. The bigger question on the horizon is whether or not Man of Steel will finish in second place this summer or third behind Monsters University.

Opening Next Week: Despicable Me 2 (Wednesday), The Lone Ranger (Wednesday)
