WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: 'Purge' Terrorizes Charts at #1, Places 'Internship' on Lockdown

Google might be one of the largest players online, but audiences were turned off by The Internship, an Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn comedy where two become interns at the online juggernaut. Instead the top spot at the box office weekend this past weekend went to the micro-marketed thriller, The Purge

Last week's top pair, Fast & Furious 6 and Now You See Me continue to hold despite growing competition at the box office. Both films are still gunning for $250 million and $100 million runs respectively, which were predicted to be highly unlikely a month ago.

With the highly anticipated Superman reboot, Man of Steel being released this Friday and Monsters University the Friday after, the current slew of releases are racking up the numbers now before two potentially large week-to-week declines.

Note: These #'s are based on Sunday's projections and can change with Monday's actual #'s

#1 The Purge (NR)
$36.4 million / $36.4 million total

While many box office analysts had The Internship pegged at #1, instead it was The Purge claiming the top spot opening to $36 million. While The Purge earned a #1 spot and became one of the largest openers of 2013, the thriller is expected to plummet like previous films in the genre. The Purge should finish in the range of high 70s to low 80s.

#2 Fast & Furious 6 (1)
$19.8 million / $202.9 million total

After two weeks atop the box office charts, Fast & Furious 6 finds itself in the runner-up position, closing its third weekend with an additional $20 million. This sixth installment continues to match Fast Five in week-to-week performance and surpass the film domestically in the coming days. In addition, Fast & Furious 6 joined Oz the Great and Powerful, Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness as 4th film of 2013 to cross $200 million.

#3 Now You See Me (2)
$19.5 million / $61.4 million total

Last week's second place shocker, Now You See Me fell one notch down to #3, riding a leggy 33 percent decline. The Woody Harrelson magic-fueled caper enjoyed a few spots over the weekdays at #1, even surpassing Fast & Furious 6. Now You See Me is expected to conjure up a few magic tricks to reach a once-unthinkable $100 million run.

#4 The Internship (NR)
$18.1 million / $18.1 million total

Comedies continue to struggle this summer, first with Todd Phillips' The Hangover Part III underperforming. Now a few weeks later, The Internship finds itself in the same boat. This Owen Wilson / Vince Vaughn comedic reteaming opened to little over half of what their 2005 breakout film, Wedding Crashers debuted. Seems too much Google in one movie isn't necessarily the answer to making a financially successful comedy.

#5 Epic (5)
$12.1 million / $84.2 million total

Rounding out the weekend's Top 5 films for the second consecutive week, Epic fell a slim 27 percent, bringing its cumulative gross to $84 million. This animated adventure continues to hold well with no direct competition currently in theaters. That of course changes in two weeks as Pixar's latest feature, Monsters University hits theaters.

Opening Next Week: This is the End (Wednesday), Man of Steel
