WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: 'Fast & Furious 6' Fuels Record Memorial Day Weekend, 'Hangover' Ends Up Wasted

With tentpoles, Fast & Furious 6 and The Hangover Part III going head-to-head on the same weekend and two major blockbusters holding over, this Memorial Day weekend became the third largest weekend in box office history.

Vin Diesel action vehicle, Fast & Furious 6 topped the box office with ease with a franchise-record $98.5 million, while the third Wolfpack outing failed to live up to the hype despite switching gears after the 2011 rehash that simply swapped out Vegas for Bangkok disappointed fans of the 2009 breakout comedy.

Blue Sky's Epic attracted the family crowd, who weren't all that into fast rides or man-child antics. With no family films out in theaters since DreamWorks The Croods, Epic challenged last week's #1, Star Trek Into Darkness for the 3rd spot.

Note: These #'s are based on Sunday's projections and can change with Monday's actual #'s

#1 Fast & Furious 6 (NR)
$98.5 million / $98.5 million total

The Fast and the Furious was once a franchise on life support a few years ago with Tokyo Drift. Now there's nothing stopping 12-year-old series from larger and larger opening weekends. This sixth installment topped Memorial Day weekend with a franchise-high $98.5 million, topping Fast Five's $86.2 million back in 2011. With only one more movie left, which is scheduled for July 2014, Fast & Furious 6 is at the top of its game, but expected to drop heavily in the coming weeks.

#2 The Hangover Part III (NR)
$42.4 million / $54.2 million total

The party's over for The Hangover Part III, which disregarded the twice-used formula of four friends tracing their steps after a night on the town for a darker adventure bringing the Wolfpack back to Vegas. Bowing to a franchise-low $42.4 million, The Hangover Part III brings the trilogy to a close with what's expected to be the first sub $200 million run for the series.

#3 Star Trek Into Darkness (1)
$38.0 million / $146.8 million total

Dropping two spots from last week, Star Trek Into Darkness continues to hold despite direct competition. In its second frame, the sci-fi sequel dropped 45%, racking up nearly $150 million. Star Trek Into Darkness still trails its 2009 predecessor with its sights still on the double century mark in the weeks ahead.

#4 Epic (NR)
$34.2 million / $34.2 million total

Blue Sky Entertainment might not put out films that can rival Pixar, but for families whose only option has been The Croods since late March, Epic is breath of fresh air at the box office. The pint-sized adventure opened to a surprising $34.2 million and should continue to do well in the coming weeks with no competition until Pixar's Monsters University on June 21.

#5 Iron Man 3 (2)
$19.4 million / $367.5 million total

The biggest movie of the year, Iron Man 3 dropped three spots to number 5, but still managed to rake in nearly $20 million in its 4th weekend. The first film from Marvel's Phase Two continues be a key player at the box office with the $400 million dollar mark on the horizon in just a few weeks.
